And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand. Michael Joncas
My arrival in Mt. Shasta City, at the foot of the magnificient 14,000 foot Mt. Shasta was a bit anxious. The temperature was well above 100, the air was full of smoke from area forest fires and my vacation rental didn’t have air conditioning. That first day, I wasn’t even sure I could stay. As it turned out, cottage was well shaded. My landlord supplied an air-purifier and I was comfortable even though I couldn’t open the windows. It was my first lesson that I could be comfortable in a variety of conditions.
For the first six weeks, I worked with Janet Riemer of The Blossoming to heal on a number of levels. I released old limiting beliefs, learned how to ground fully into my body, to feel my connection to the earth and to face my fears of being out on the mountain. It was terrific to have Janet as my guide to the sacred spaces and to the community. One big change was to take better care of my body by, temporarily, eating only fish, chicken, vegetables, quinoa and good oils.
Below: On my first visit to the sacred Panther Meadow, I arrived in time to hear the angelic voice of a woman in sacred song.
The Siskiyou Lake trail became my favorite evening walk.
The majestic mountain is evident wherever you go.
For the rest of my stay I practiced my new skills, which included trusting myself to make wise decisions and to find my own connections in the community. I discovered that I loved being outdoors on the mountain, at the lake or simply taking a four block walk to downtown Mt. Shasta. One real gift was the generous friendship of “blog friend” Christine O’Brien, who invited me for tea, connected me with local events – including a group that met to watch Dancing with the Stars- hosted events at her home where I met her wonderful friends, Frances, Gael and Carolyn. After it got cold she sent bulletins about the weather and driving conditions. She is a poet-artist and also aspires to publish picture books for children.
After completing an intensive on-line picture book writing class from the Children’s Picture Book Academy I created a prototype of my picture book, Corey’s Peaceful Heart. It was great fun to learn to use the simple Paint software. The “real artist” Kathy Voerg is working on the final illustrations.
I had the opportunity to share Corey with K, 1st and 2nd graders in Lori Crockett’s classes at the Golden Eagle Charter School. I was invited back to share the feelings and needs activity from the Connection Practice curriculum, with two classes of older elementary children. It was a joy!
As the cold days passed in my cozy cottage, I focused on self-care and continued to release buried fears and old beliefs while working with amazing healers: Dr. Richard Shearer, Physical therapists, Lisa and Cindy at Mercy Mt. Shasta hospital, Lynn Lloyd, Dr. Robert Henley, healer, Don “Adami Phillips, Della Clark and Andrew Osler.
As I relaxed and healed, the days began to flow beautifully with unexpected events. Wendy, a fellow traveler, came to stay a while after meeting my Houston friend, Eileen, at a California retreat. It was really fun to have company, conversation and a sight-seeing partner.
After meeting Soti at Noorah’s monthly dance in September, we kept running into each other on the street. She is fellow spiritual traveler, making a contribution wherever she goes. She volunteers at New 2 U Thrift Store, which supplied many of my small needs – including books. When she discovered a donation of 64 completed grandmother’s fan quilt squares, she had the vision to create a quilt to raffle for a higher profit. We had great fun planning and I had the joy of creating of assembling a twin quilt top which will be quilted by local quilters.
As the days of my stay dwindled, I faced real grief to think of leaving this place where I found friendship, purpose and such a sense of community. Then I realized that these were all qualities that I could take with me on my journey. In a session with Andrew Osler I recognized the old, unconscious limiting belief that IF I make a mistake, THEN I will be rejected by people and God! And because I feared rejection, I have often experienced that situation. By the end of the session I was joyfully able to see that it was safe to like myself and just let myself have FUN. What a concept!
On my last morning I drove to Lake Shastine to see Jannierose and Charlie Fenimore. Jannirose is a sound healer and author. Charlie is an earth angel, whose mission is to share light with all he meets. See their story at Lessons from an Earth Angel. I experienced an amazing sound healing. Jannirose reported that during the session she had to walk around my wings – six feet wide – which I had not mentioned to her.
And so with a light and grateful heart, I said my good-byes and headed south toward the Pacific Ocean.
