An Unusual Love Story

You and me
Two prisoners of destiny
Our souls, created together
Like a lock and the key
We are two feathers
from the arrow of Cupid
They named us David and Ingrid
Without me, you’re incomplete
Without you, I quiver and wilt

Yet duty keeps us apart
They say, love is a luxury
that we cannot afford
As we are the guardians
of a beautiful blue orb
After all, David and Ingrid
We are two dutiful eyelids

Every morning we die
As the world comes alive
They take you away
and chain me to a wall
at the watch tower
on the opposite shore
I can see you over the horizon
Looking worn out and silent

But the worst is the tease
When they bring us so close
Our fingers can touch
Only to pull back our leash
before I could kiss you
and tell how much I miss you

But at least we get to breathe
in that fleeting moment
So we can both survive
Until the next round of torment
Which inevitably arrives
In the blink of an eye
And continues, with no end in sight.
….
….
As we burn through this eternal madness
By the grace of Lord, the night descends
One by one, weary eyes close
Now the music to our ears
is the guardian’s whispering snores

Quietly, we roll over
And meet in the middle
Where we make our bed
Floating in a blue ocean,
over the clouds
under sparkling stars
and pull the bed covers,
like two soft lids, over us

Like two crescent moons
Our shapes perfectly align
Our two bodies become one
As we hold tight and embrace
with a hundred finger lace
We play, giggle, and make love
With no hurry and no haste

May the sun never rise
May the night never end
May she never open her eyes
And spare us another day of torment

But the night always ends
And the sun always rises
So, she must open her eyes,
each one, a sparkling blue orb,
that look around and watch
and all the beauty, they absorb
We are the guardians of those jewels
After all, David and Ingrid
We are two dutiful eyelids

But love doesn’t understand mission
So, our lashes don’t let their grip
Unless they are pried open
Onto our towers we are marched
And so begins our watch
and the lovers’ endless suffering
